For many years, it's been my tradition to start of the new year with a visit to the gym and take down all of my holiday
decorations. This year I decided to try something different. For as long as I can remember, there has been a New
Year's Day festival in Little Tokyo, so I decided to give it a try this year. There have been a few years when the weather
has not cooperated, but this year, it was a beautiful day to be outside to enjoy this Japanese New Year's festival. The
festival starts off with taiko drumming and the breaking open of two large barrels of sake. The public is welcome to have
a free glass of sake, and of course, it's nice to take advantage of that. The bulk of the entertainment for the day is
made of martial arts demonstrations, dancing, and music taking place on stages in both Weller Court and the Japanese
Village Plaza. For me it was a nice change of pace and a way to relax after the hectic holiday season.
