Pacific Media Expo
October 28-29  Los Angeles, CA
This year was the third year for this convention.  This was also the third different venue that this
convention has been held at, moving from the much larger Long Beach and Anaheim Convention
Centers to the much smaller LAX Hilton.  I haven't been back to this particular venue since the last time
Anime Expo was held here in 1997.  This was also the third different date for this convention, moving
away from the Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends that this convention was previously held on.
This year the convention was also shortened from three days to just two.

There were also some big changes to the program from last year.  The music program took big a big
stop forward with OLIVIA, UchuSentai NOIZ, and MECHANiCAL PANDA coming from Japan and local
bands Dig Jelly and Random Ninjas returning from last year.  Animation guests of honor for this year
were from American animation--Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino, creators of the Nickelodeon
series
Avatar:  The Last Airbender.  Fashion icon and creator of Kamikaze Girls, Novala Takemoto, was
also a guest of honor this year.  With its unique mix of concerts, anime, Asian film, and cultural
demonstrations, Pacific Media Expo is a welcome break from the run of the mill anime conventions and
is more of an Asian pop culture convention.
