|SoCal Valentine's Day Cosplay Picnic

Today, I originally intended to cover the Lunar New Year festivities in LA's Chinatown. However, after
encountering terrible traffic and parking problems at that event, I just kept on driving and eventually
ended up here. This was the first time I've ever attended a fan-organized cosplay event. Even though
new anime conventions have popped up in the Southern California area in the past few years, many
fans are no longer content to just wait until the next convention to get together and share their hobby.
Independent events are becoming increasingly popular in the US and such events can attract hundreds
After many years of photographing cosplay, attending this event was a very new experience for me.
Since I'm a notoriously slow starter, it would have been very easy for me to just sit back and spend the
whole time socializing and not even get in the mood to take photos. In typical fashion, I didn't start
taking any photos until the 4-hour event was halfway over. In the end it turned out to be a somewhat
I enjoyed this event. Like most people, I just enjoy being out there with the fans regardless of whether
I'm being productive or not. I'm actually quite surprised that I did enough to create a page on this event.
Officially, it becomes the second stop on the retirement tour. In all likelihood, I won't be making it to
events like this next year, so it was good for me to experience this. There are a few more of these lined
up for this year and hopefully I can make it to a few of these.
